DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The project involves fully renovating the Mitre Railway’s main hub, a century-old network of tracks where branch line trains connect. Covering an area of 85,000 m², it will include laying 1,000 tons of new rails, installing 56 track devices, electrifying 8 km of track, and implementing a modern signaling system. These upgrades aim to improve train traffic, streamline operations, and enhance safety standards.
At the Retiro main station, where over 200,000 people pass through daily, major engineering upgrades will be made. The work will involve removing the entire track infrastructure, building a new platform and two additional platforms, adding ramps to nine platforms, electrifying and signaling the tracks, and completely renewing all track systems for both local and long-distance services. This includes installing slab tracks for the first time in Argentina at the station’s hub. Additional updates include renovating the port track, replacing the steel third rail with an aluminum one, upgrading electrical wiring and connections, enhancing signaling, and activating a new control system, among other improvements.
At the nearby San Martín Railway station, new facilities were built, including an administrative building, a police station, pre-boarding areas for long-distance passengers, and upgrades to platforms and tracks with ADVs. In total, 850 m² of covered space was constructed.
The Retiro rail yard, originally designed in the early 20th century to meet the technology standards of its time, had not undergone a full renovation in over 100 years. This project will modernize the Mitre Train to meet current technological standards, improving travel times for passengers.
