The fourth dike of the Integral Use of the Rio San Juan will have the largest reservoir volume (605 hm3), expanding irrigation capacity in the region and regulating river water levels and flow, vital for powering the local economy. Annual energy production is expected to reach 343 GWh.

DESCRIPTION OF WORKS
The El Tambolar Hydropower plant, is to be built on the San Juan River near the town of Pachaco, 145 km from the city of San Juan and 20 km upstream of the Los Caracoles dam.
The preliminary works in this project involves drawing up the Executive Project covering the entire scope of the works as well as the workers’ camp and administration offices, the two diversion tunnels for the San Juan river, the sluice chamber for the future sluice way and a third tunnel to access the sluice chamber.
The diversion of the river for the construction of the dam was undertaken by building two parallel tunnels lined with a reinforced concrete trunk section on the right bank of the river. Both tunnels are 6 meters in diameter and have a length of 492 meters. One of the two tunnels will later function as a bottom outlet, so a sluice gate will be built inside it with an access tunnel leading to it.
One of the two tunnels will later function as a bottom discharger, for which a gate chamber and an access tunnel will be built within it. The purpose of this third tunnel is only to access the gate chamber during the operation of the dam. It will have a section of 5.00 x 5.80 m and a length of 305 meters.
